A market some 4 miles upstream from the head of the Dovey estuary, Machynlleth is a popular tourist and angling centre. The town itself has little of outstanding attraction, but is set in fine, softly wooded scenery, and near the entrance to the very lovely vale of Corris. A “toy” railway runs from the town 6 miles up to Corris at the head of the vale.
In 1402 Glyndwr held Parliament in the town, and accepted the Kingship of Wales. An attempt at assassination was foiled, and the intriguer, Sir Dafydd Gam, was imprisoned, but lived to fight - and die - at Agincourt. The parliament house, now an institute, may be visited in Maengwyn Street.
